Service member spouses face a unique set of challenges that are foreign to civilian couples. Not only do spouses face separation from their partner due to military deployment, but they may also undergo relocation, working as a single parent, or becoming a Veteran’s primary caregiver. Though life as a military spouse has its hurdles, support resources are available. Let’s discuss several organizations that can help military spouses, from career development to emotional well-being and complementary armed forces travel services.

Luke’s Wings offers free emergency travel planning and airline tickets so loved ones of qualifying wounded, ill, or injured service members can reunite for emergent care needs, providing continuous support during recovery. Below, we list 5 supportive resources for military spouses:

1. Military OneSource

This Department of Defense-funded program offers military spouses and families 24/7 assistance, information, and support. Military OneSource is home to a variety of resources, including confidential counseling, relocation advice, employment resources, and financial planning guidance. Tools, articles, and products are free to service members, military spouses, parents, and Veterans on its website.

2. Blue Star Families

Founded in 2009 by a team of military spouses, Blue Star Families empowers military families and loved ones to thrive by connecting them with their civilian neighbors and creating supportive communities.

The frequent moves, deployments, and complex realities that military and Veteran spouses face can cause feelings of isolation and alienation. Through local networking efforts, Blue Star Families promote understanding of military family life and facilitate meaningful engagement between civilians and their military neighbors.

3. U.S. Department of Labor

Military spouses and caregivers seeking to advance their careers should also explore the Transition Employment Assistance for Military Spouses and Caregivers (TEAMS) program offered by the U.S. Department of Labor. The program’s instructor-led, virtual workshops cover essential employment curriculums tailored to individual skill sets. Furthermore, workshops consist of stand-alone modules and can accommodate any schedule.

4. National Military Spouse Network

The National Military Spouse Network (NMSN) is a private, non-profit organization that advocates for the needs and professional advancement of military spouses. The NMSN offers a variety of resources, such as professional development mentoring and networking opportunities. Though the military lifestyle can be unpredictable, the NMSN believes a rewarding career is achievable for service member spouses.

5. Elizabeth Dole Foundation

Founded by Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2012, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation encourages, supports, and honors our Nation’s military caregivers. For families, spouses, parents, or friends who care for wounded, ill, or injured Veterans, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation offers health & wellness services, platforms for peer support, respite care programs, and more.
