Supporting Independence: Steven's Journey to Driving with Adjoin's Help
For many of us, independence is as simple as grabbing our keys and heading out the door. However, for individuals living with autism, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, independence often requires determination, support, and a community that believes in their potential.
At Adjoin, we know that navigating the community is a vital part of living independently. For some of the people we support, that means learning to ride public transportation or coordinating rides with caregivers. For others like Steven, it means getting behind the wheel of their very own car.
Steven lives with a disability that may affect how he communicates with others and processes certain situations. What it does not affect is his capability, responsibility, or determination to be a safe driver.
One of Steven’s biggest personal goals was to earn his driver’s license, something very obtainable for Steven and many others like him but with just one obstacle. Living on a fixed income made the upfront costs of behind-the-wheel driver’s ed classes a significant barrier.
With encouragement of his Adjoin Independent Living Services team, he passed the written exam. The next step, behind-the-wheel training, came with an up-front cost of $400. That’s when the Butterfly Club stepped in, a client assistance fund sustained by Adjoin’s employee giving program.
Steven received the financial support he needed to enroll in driver’s ed classes, hone his driving skills for almost a year, and pass his DMV driving test. What could have been a stopping point instead became a turning point.
For nearly a year, Steven dedicated himself to learning and preparing to be a fellow California driver. Adjoin is proud to support his goals, cheer him on, and create solutions for roadblocks. Steven carries his driver’ license like a badge of honor. It is a story of perseverance and a milestone of independence earned through hard work and community support.
Steven’s experience enlightens us to the idea that sometimes independence isn’t about ability, it’s about opportunity. Thanks to the generosity of people who donate to Adjoin, one more barrier was removed to make one more dream a reality for one more neighbor in our community.
