Volunteering at Salvation Army: Impact of Bell Ringing

Story

Every December, as the first crisp snow blankets the streets, I pull out my red scarf and head to the familiar spot outside the grocery store. It’s a tradition for me now—ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. The little red kettle might be small, but the impact it represents is monumental. The first time I signed up, I didn’t know what to expect. Would people stop? Would they care? The thought of standing there, asking for donations, felt intimidating. But I wanted to do something meaningful during the holiday season, something that reminded me—and hopefully others—of the kindness and generosity that make this time of year so special. From the moment I rang that bell, I realized this was about so much more than collecting money. It was about connecting with people. A mom with her two kids stopped by, each child dropping a few coins into the kettle. “We do this every year,” she said, smiling. “It’s our way of giving back.” An older man walked up, reached into his coat pocket, and handed me a crisp bill. “I’ve been on the receiving end of this help before,” he said softly. “Now it’s my turn to give.” Every interaction, no matter how brief, feels like a spark of hope. Some people give generously; others drop in spare change. But every contribution adds up to something extraordinary: meals for families, warm coats for children, a roof over someone’s head for another night. Standing there, watching the kettle fill little by little, I can feel the weight of what this means for those in need. What I love most about bell ringing is how it brings out the best in people. Strangers smile at each other, inspired by the simple act of giving. Children learn the joy of sharing, and I get to be a part of it all. It’s a reminder that we’re all connected, especially during a season that can feel so focused on material things. The few hours I spend ringing the bell fly by, but the warmth it brings to my heart lingers for weeks. Every time I hear that familiar jingle in another part of town, I smile, knowing that someone else is out there, making the same small but mighty difference. If you’ve ever considered giving it a try, I can’t recommend it enough. You’ll not only help your community, but you’ll walk away with a renewed sense of what the holiday season is truly about: kindness, generosity, and hope.
