Story

Leaking every time it rains. Snakes slithering across the floor. Partially collapsing on multiple occasions. Unsafe and beyond repair. These were some of the challenges and dangers facing Nakibuule’s family in their home.

Every year, our community engagement department identifies qualifying families in need of a safer place to call home. Amazima built five homes last year for families of our students. One of those five was Nakibuule Zaam, single mother of six.

With three children enrolled at Amazima, we recognize how difficult it would be for our students to focus and thrive at school if they know their families are struggling at home. When we commit to a student, we also commit to their family. It is this commitment that drove us to be there for Nakibuule’s family when her home collapsed.

“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” -1 Thessalonians 2:8

We desire to not only share the gospel of Jesus, but to truly live it out by loving people, meeting them where they are, and taking care of tangible needs as they arise. For Nakibuule’s family, a very real need they had was to live in a safe and stable home.

“I have witnessed a house falling on children,” Richard, the family’s mentor, says, “so this new home has filled me with joy which I can’t explain. They have been waiting for years, and I am beyond happy for the safety of these children.”

The new house was built on the same land where their previous home stood. For years, Nakibuule worried about the safety of her children and every day she prayed that something would change. But what changed was beyond her wildest imagination: a brand new home.

“To me, this house is a symbol of God’s love for me,” Nakibuule reflects, “and now I know that He thinks about me.” On the day the house was commissioned, she accepted Christ as her savior. How could she not? It was the only response, in her eyes, as all doubt about God’s love and care for her had been removed. She is now confident that He loves and sees her.

When we commit, we commit. We are dedicated to caring for the whole person of each of our students, and in turn, their families and communities. What begins as discipleship in the classroom extends far beyond the school walls and into the lives of those surrounding our students.

“I’m overwhelmed by the love and care that has been shown to me by God through Amazima,” Nakibuule recounts through tears. She hoped for a change in her circumstances, but what she hadn’t considered was the change of heart she would have. A new heart in Christ.

Thank you for partnering with us to make dreams come true and most importantly, to be a tangible representation of God’s love for His children. We are so grateful for this opportunity to not only share the gospel, but to live it out with our very lives.
