TODAY THE WORLD COMES TOGETHER FOR FREEDOM

, an internationally recognized day that is dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and protecting the rights of survivors. This day is crucial for highlighting the severe impacts of human trafficking, a crime that exploits women, children, and men for numerous purposes including forced labor and sex.

You’ve probably seen national and international days, weeks, and months dedicated to causes or celebrations, such as National Strawberry Day or International Women’s Day. Well today is no different, but it holds a very powerful meaning. World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013. The purpose of this day is to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.” The importance of this day cannot be overstated; it serves as a global call to action, urging governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to amplify efforts in combating human trafficking.*

Each year, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons adopts a specific theme to highlight different aspects of human trafficking. For 2024, the theme is “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking” emphasizing the importance of inclusive and comprehensive approaches to combat trafficking and support all survivors, regardless of their circumstances.

What day is Human Trafficking Awareness Day? It’s important to note that while Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the United States is observed on January 11th, today’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30th focuses on global awareness and action, providing a broader platform for international cooperation and advocacy.

According to the International Labor Organization, an estimated 49.6 million people are living in modern-day slavery worldwide, 1 in 4 of which are children. Human Trafficking itself takes two primary forms according to the United States Government: Forced Labor and Sex Trafficking. You can learn more about these statistics here.

This issue is great, but HOPE is greater. Together, we can bring an end to this evil one life at a time. Will you join us?

Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights. Right now, millions of people – particularly women and children – are trapped in exploitative conditions. By observing this day, we acknowledge the resilience of trafficking survivors and reaffirm our commitment to eradicating this heinous crime.
