Investing in Students for San Diego's Future Workforce

    May 2025 SDBJ :
Investing in Students Today to Build San Diego’s Future Workforce

When Johnny Garcia graduated from high school in 2015, he had big dreams for his future but limited resources to get there. That changed when he received a Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship to support his college education—and equally life-changing, a refurbished laptop computer from Computers 2 Kids (C2K).

It was the first computer Johnny had ever owned.

Growing up in Southeast San Diego’s Valencia Park neighborhood, Johnny often spent hours at the Malcolm X Library, relying on public computers to complete his homework. Buying his own computer always seemed out of reach.

“I had always thought computers were way too expensive,” Johnny recalls. “Receiving my first computer from Computers to Kids gave me confidence. It made me feel like I was ready for college.”

That single device helped launch Johnny’s academic and professional journey. After earning a degree in criminal justice from San Diego State University in 2019, he served  as a Board Assistant for the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and then as an Impact Manager at United Way. Today, Johnny is a Senior Consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he supports the Department of Defense and contributes to national security efforts.

Johnny’s story is just one example of how Computers 2 Kids transforms lives by closing the digital divide.

“Access to technology is no longer a luxury—it is essential for academic success, workforce readiness, and full participation in today’s economy,” said Chéri Pierre, CEO of C2K. “Students without computers face significant barriers to completing schoolwork, applying for colleges, and building computer skills,” Pierre added.

C2K addresses these challenges by refurbishing donated technology and distributing low-cost computers to underserved children and families. In addition to devices, C2K provides digital literacy training, technical support, and access to affordable internet services, ensuring that technology becomes a bridge—not a barrier—to opportunity.

When asked about his first computer from C2K, Johnny emphasized that a child without a computer cannot be successful.

“I think every student, especially those from low-income families, needs to know about resources like C2K that remove barriers.”

Since 2004, C2K has distributed more than 300,000 computers, and this year marks the 15th anniversary of C2K’s partnership with the Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship, providing computers to all scholarship recipients to support their academic success. The scholarship is awarded annually to high school seniors in San Diego and Imperial Counties who have overcome personal adversity and are pursuing higher education.

By supporting C2K—whether through device donations, funding, or community partnerships—San Diego’s business community can invest in the region’s future workforce. Companies that donate their retired technology not only empower students in need but also benefit from a safe, environmentally responsible way to dispose of electronic waste, often reducing storage and disposal costs. When students like Johnny Garcia are given access to the tools they need to succeed, it transforms individual lives, building a more resilient San Diego for generations to come.
